Despite the rainy weekend weather, Sunday, September 13, was the final day of competition for the Kohawk golf teams who competed at the Klocke Family Classic at Hunter’s Ridge Golf Course in Marion, Iowa. The competition was hosted by Mount Mercy University with a total of twelve teams in attendance.

The men’s team shot a team score of 329 on Sunday, which brought their total weekend score to 646. This placed the team at an overall tenth place finish with Indian Hills CC at the top of the leaderboard. Lucas Geiger (‘24) led the Kohawks with a 28th place finish after shooting a 75 final round.

The week before the invitational was not what any golfer would have wanted. The course held a lot of rain that occurred prior to Sunday.

Geiger stated, “Our golf tournament over the weekend, our team battled and put together some decent scores. The back nine at the course we played was very difficult and the course was very wet from the long stretch of rain.”

Blake Newell (‘22) and Alec Brockmeyer (‘24) followed close behind Geiger with final scores of 84 which put them in 44th and 56th place respectively.

The rain wasn’t the only thing that made the invitational tough.

“The most challenging thing about this weekend was probably going into the tournament without much course knowledge,” said Newell. “There were a number of holes that can catch you off guard if you don’t know a lot about the golf course.”

The women’s team wrapped up on Sunday as well with a final-round score of 427. The Kohawks finished with a team score of 835 with Megan Tanghe (‘24) leading the pack with a top ten finish. Her score of 95 put her in ninth place. Just below Tanghe was Katie Mason (‘21) who shot a 96 and finished in 22nd place. The Kohawks finished in fifth place overall while Mount Mercy finished on top in first place.

Both teams will be back to action next weekend as they take on Luther College at the Luther Fall Invite September 19-21st.
